Host your own Beach Cleanup!

Want to host your own Beach Cleanup? Everything you need to know right here!

• Choose a site, time, and date - Pick a dirty beach or river* and a Saturday or Sunday morning. Get an early start and you'll finish before the day gets too hot. Send a your event details to cleanupguam@gmail.com and it will get posted on our Cleanup Events page.
*Why do we clean rivers? Because they all lead to the ocean!

• Volunteers - Tell your friends and make a Facebook event. Link to your event on MDA's page and any other local groups or businesses you think may want to lend support. (MDA's Facebook links can be found in the right sidebar.)

• Supplies - You don't need much, trash bags, gloves, and a cooler of water are the essentials.
Seek support from your friends and local businesses for supplies. Cleanup gloves are available at most "mom & pop" stores and at Payless for about $5 for a package of 10.

• Village Mayor's office
Lighten your work load by getting the support of the village Mayor's office! Give them a call, they're happy to help! Let them know you want to host a beach cleanup in their village and want to ensure there are no conflicting events that day. Most Mayor's offices will help you dispose of the trash you collect, so remember to ask! All of their numbers can be found here:

Guam Mayors Directory >

• Trucks - If the mayor's resources are booked on your weekend you'll need a few trucks to transport trash and recycling to the proper disposal centers. Ask volunteers and friends with pickup trucks for assistance.

• Recycling plan
Ordot dump will not accept much of the debris you collect. The last thing you want is a truck full of trash and nowhere to put it, so know your recyclables and recycling centers! At your cleanup you will need to assign "sorters" -- a small group of people who, instead of picking up trash, will pull the recyclables out of bags that others bring in. You'll end up with separate piles of aluminum cans, plastic bottles, glass, scrap metal, and tires. Bag these and don't mix them up with the trash! (we use clear or white bags for recycling to help keep them separate).
