How to Fit a Mask

MDA Mask fitting tips for scuba diving and snorkeling on Guam

5. The inner seal.

With your mask in place, look into a mirror. Pay close attention to the inner seal - check to make sure the seal isn't being broken by the corners of your eyes or your eyebrows.

Blink and squint your eyes. If it any of these things breaks the inner seal you may have problems with leakage in the water.

6. The mouthpiece test.
If you're purchasing a mask you'll most likely be using it with a snorkel or regulator - so you'll need to make sure that having the mouthpiece in your mouth doesn't break the seal of your mask.

If you have a snorkel or a reg handy, put the mouthpiece in your mouth and test it out. Pay close attention to the area near your upper lip. If no mouthpiece is available you can simulate one by placing your index finger between your upper lip and front teeth.

7. Adjusting your mask strap.
Now that your mask is properly fitted it's time to adjust the strap. Adust the strap to be just snug enough to keep the mask on your head. If you've followed the mask fitting steps carefully, water will provide enough pressure to keep your mask sealed without pulling the strap too tight. A tight mask strap is a much more common problem than a loose one. An over-tightened mask strap will squeeze the mask to your face, warping the seal and causing more leakage.
